Summertime dark night ocean swims

Stars in the ocean ~ Brighter than the sun

Noctiluca scintillans ~ photo of electron-microscope projection ~ this little guy is pure magic ~ thank you Chris & André.

Where the road runs out, the magic begins…

Especially at night time, when it’s really really dark.

No moon, so far from anywhere, not a lightbulbs in site, scramble down the steep slope to the water’s edge, through old forests of tall trees, the sound of the lapping ocean, the great Pacific, meaning peace. Here we are. A headlamp helps us get settled, no phones allowed, only you and me on the rock laid out on our backs starfished, looking up at the big bright night sky, so clear, crisp, vast, distant… so far away… realizing its all around us, we’re bang in the middle of the vastness. Spinning slowly, watching the tree-line against the starry night sky… if you’ve been here you know what I mean… eyes adjust to darkness looking for patterns, movement, comprehension, wonder… sitting up and see all that up there reflected in the ocean out there, clear calm glass-life surface-deep mirror of our multi-galactic universe… little us in the middle of all that.

Sigh ~ let it in, the disbelief and wonder, infinite miracles, realizing we are that same impossible magic, breathe in the scent of the forest, no breeze, senses alive, feeling the heat in the rock held over from a glorious sunny day. Glacial fed seawaters where whales pass by. Those ancient trees, slow growth reaching up connecting universal energy to all life on earth… another grateful breath… stand up, eyes adjusted, find the edge, see through the water, flecks of light.

Some nights the whole shoreline aglow from lapping waves breaking on the rocks…

Some nights it just dark, so dark… so we strip off and jump in… watch first, then follow.

Splash human entering water, deep dark water that leaves a trail of light, big tails flow, following movement and motion… standing watching almost falling in drawn to follow your intoxicated mesmerized eyes. Wow, beauty, wonder, magic, a fairy-tale. Yet no, it’s real, arms swimming reaching pulling, movement generates light, continuous plumes of light, impossible delight in the darkness of night.

Watch for a while then jump on in, noticing the starry reflection as your fingers break the surface, creating light as they enter, eyes open or not, there they are trails of stars flowing from your hand and body. Stop, be still, twitch a finger, one star, one stream of light, fan flicking fingers slowly a fan of light, swimming the crawl plunging finger and arm igniting the dark water, trails of light surround you. Water dripping from your arm like droplets of light, how’s this possible in the dark of night ?

Breast stroke follow fingers and arms, ripples of light up ahead of your nose, blowing gently spits up mini fireworks. Kick your legs, swim, move, lights trails everywhere. Stop, start, breaking the darkness, spin around, trails. Wiggle and kick to witness your whole body lit by the magical glow ~ a fish swims by you see its trail darting by.

To lay back and look up at the sky, floating in the reflected heavens, wafting your hands making more stars below the surface, all around, like they’re coming from you, starlight… it’s true, and so magical when shared with friends for the first time. Their gasp of delight after initial trepidation. Stepping foot off land into the dark night into a rolling ocean, although calm it is shifting. Safe on a calm night, know the place by day before entering at night.

One night intoxicated by it all for 3 hours, in and out, playing with the log tied to the shore with rope long enough for the log to move with the tide and gentle waves, climbing on, rolling off, back on, off again, all the while the motion of body and rolling log creating trails of fine crystal clear starry lights, floating in them and looking up at them knowing Mother Earth our planet is spinning in the vastness of it all, stunned and in aware we are the only known source of life in the infinite expanding universe.

Floating through the heavens soaking it all in, pausing long enough to notice “I’m here to witness this and share the gifts of life” . Then realizing its there all the time whether I notice or not, so notice when you can, be still, listen, swim in it, it’s your life, a dark night in the ocean, effortless, in awe and bliss, overflowing with heartfelt gratitude.

What a treat, we get one life, embrace it all, make it worthwhile. Being here, being you, being me. Stop smell the roses and be sure to enjoy time deep in nature too.

Listen to that whisper, it’s your nature deep inside, another impossible miracle, our body, soul, spirit, awareness, awakenessness, we are as impossible and miraculous as the stars and the whole universe.

What are the chances of this, and us being here now to enjoy it. Be it. Be in it. Part of it. In awe of it all.

Aware of the many lives, many generations before us, strong survivors, now today so pampered blindly destroying this beautiful sacred life-giving planet in deep space. Our life giving given gift ~ Mother Earth, its time to show respect and give back to she who feeds and nurtures all life and this wonderful terrestrial experience.

Thank you to those who have gone before, for all the learning shared, orally, in art, words and pure imaginations expressed. While happy, also sad, conscious that we take no responsibility for our destructive consumption, what habits can we change today?

What habit will you change today ?

All this is all too beautiful to spoil and destroy.

We’re here to share and connect ~ thank you Neil and Dan for the introduction near Saltspring, my first bio-dip, and now here on the Coast Salish coast, home, nightly dips in the magic, to the many friends bold enough to dive in, and to the magic of pure delight.

Thank you universe, out there, and in here, in me, and you and us all.

Let’s dip in the dark ocean again, and often, and soon.

Please share responsibly. Keeping the magic alive for many generations to come.

Nature, it’s in us all to share.

Sorry to say no photo to share, I’ve tried and it’s impossible in the darkness… these words maybe sufficiently enticing for you to join me/us soon for the magic of lived in-person experience !
